Quick answer
Choose TPE if you want a softer, squishier feel for less money and don't mind a stricter care routine. TPE is porous, so it needs thorough drying, regular powdering and protection from dyed fabrics. Choose silicone if you want lower maintenance and better durability. Silicone is non-porous, resists staining, holds detail well and tolerates more heat, but it's firmer and costs more. Most full-size dolls under $1,000 are TPE; silicone is more common in torsos, heads and premium dolls.

What TPE is, and its trade-offs
Thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) is a soft, stretchy blend of plastic and rubber-like polymers. It’s cheaper to mould than silicone, which is why most full-size dolls and torsos at lower prices use it.
Its main drawback is that it’s porous. Microscopic pores can hold moisture and bacteria if the material isn’t dried properly, so TPE needs washing after every use, careful drying inside every channel, and a light dusting of renewal powder or cornstarch to keep the surface from going tacky. It also picks up dye from clothes and bedding.

What silicone is, and its trade-offs
Silicone used in body-safe toys is a non-porous, heat-resistant polymer. Because it doesn’t absorb moisture, it’s easier to keep clean, doesn’t need powdering and resists staining. It holds fine surface detail well, which is why silicone heads are popular even on TPE dolls.
The downsides are price and feel. Silicone costs more to produce and is generally firmer. Full-silicone dolls usually cost well over $1,000; under that, you’ll mostly find silicone in torsos and heads.

Hybrid dolls
Some dolls pair a silicone head with a TPE body, giving a detailed, durable face at a TPE body price. The trade-off is two care routines: mild soap for the head, and the full TPE routine for the body.

Which should you choose?
TPE or silicone?
Choose this if…
TPE for a softer feel and a lower price, if you'll keep up with drying and powdering. Silicone for lower maintenance and longevity, if you're happy with a firmer feel.
Skip this if…
Very cheap 'jelly' dolls or sleeves with a strong chemical smell. They may be PVC with phthalate plasticisers rather than TPE.
Spend more if…
- You want a full silicone body
- You want a silicone head on a TPE body
Save money if…
A TPE torso gives you the material's soft feel at a fraction of a full doll's price.
A note on material safety
Body-safe materials matter. A Danish Environmental Protection Agency survey found that many soft “jelly” toys were plasticised PVC with high levels of phthalate plasticisers, and that oil-based lube increased how much migrated out of the material. Reputable TPE and silicone don’t use those plasticisers, but very cheap products with a strong chemical smell are worth avoiding. For a fuller breakdown of every common material, see toy materials explained.
Caring for each material
TPE: wash with warm water and mild, unscented soap; flush channels; dry thoroughly; powder lightly; store away from dyed fabrics and direct sunlight.
Silicone: wash with warm water and mild soap; dry channels; store in a clean bag. No powder needed.
Our guide to cleaning TPE vs silicone covers both routines in detail, and how to clean your sex toys safely covers smaller toys.

Frequently asked questions
Is TPE safe for sex dolls?
TPE from a reputable seller is widely used for dolls and sleeves. Because it's porous, the main risk is hygiene rather than the material itself. It must be washed and dried thoroughly after every use. Avoid very cheap "jelly" materials with a strong chemical smell, which may be PVC with phthalate plasticisers rather than TPE.
Does silicone feel less realistic than TPE?
Silicone is usually firmer and less squishy than TPE, which some people prefer and others don't. Softer platinum-cured silicones exist, but they're mostly in premium dolls. Feel is subjective, so decide whether softness or easy care matters more to you.
Can I use silicone lube on a silicone doll?
It's best not to. Silicone lubricant can degrade the surface of silicone toys and dolls. Water-based lube is safe for both TPE and silicone, so it's the simplest choice whichever material you buy. Never use oil-based lube on TPE.
Why do TPE dolls stain?
TPE absorbs dyes from clothing, bedding and some wigs, especially dark or cheaply dyed fabrics. Wash new clothes before dressing a TPE doll, avoid dark fabrics, and store it wrapped in white cotton or a clean bag. Silicone is much less prone to staining.
Which lasts longer, TPE or silicone?
Silicone generally lasts longer. It resists tearing at stress points, staining and heat better than TPE. A well-cared-for TPE doll can still last years, but tears around joints and openings are the most common wear points, so careful handling matters.
