How to clean silicone toys
- Wash with warm water and a little mild, unscented soap. Use a soft brush on ridges and textures.
- Rinse thoroughly.
- Dry with a lint-free cloth or let it air-dry.
- Optional sterilising: solid silicone toys with no motor can be boiled for a few minutes or washed on a dishwasher’s top rack, but only if the manufacturer allows it.
- Store separately in a clean bag.

How to clean TPE toys, torsos and dolls
- Rinse straight after use with warm water, before lube dries.
- Wash with mild, unscented soap. Flush channels thoroughly, using a soft brush or an irrigator for deep ones.
- Rinse until no soap remains.
- Dry completely. Pat the outside dry, then dry inside the channels with a drying stick, rolled paper towel or by air drying in a ventilated place. Heavier items hold more water and take longer.
- Powder lightly once fully dry, using cornstarch or a TPE renewal powder, to keep the surface from going tacky.
- Store separately, away from dyed fabrics, other toys, heat and direct sunlight.
Never use alcohol, bleach, oil-based products or high heat on TPE. They can damage the surface and leave it sticky or brittle.

Common problems
Smell after cleaning (TPE). Usually trapped moisture. Wash again and dry for longer. If it persists, or you see mould, replace the item.
Stickiness (TPE). Normal over time. Powder lightly once dry. Persistent stickiness is a sign of breakdown.
Stains (TPE). Caused by dyed fabrics or other toys. Prevent them by washing new clothes first and storing items separately.
White film or tackiness (silicone). Often caused by silicone lube or soap residue. Rinse well, and switch to water-based lube.
A strong chemical smell from new soft toys. This can be a sign of PVC “jelly” with phthalate plasticisers rather than TPE. A Danish Environmental Protection Agency survey found high plasticiser levels in some soft toys. Consider replacing it with silicone.
Sharing and hygiene
Don’t share porous TPE toys between partners without thorough cleaning, and ideally a condom. Public health guidance recommends washing toys between sessions and using a new condom when a toy is shared.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my toy is TPE or silicone?
Check the listing or packaging first. As a rule of thumb, TPE feels softer, stretchier and slightly tacky, and is common in strokers, torsos and dolls. Silicone feels smoother, silkier and firmer, and is common in vibrators, dildos and prostate toys. If you can't confirm the material, clean it as if it were TPE.
Can I boil a silicone toy?
Only solid silicone toys with no motor, battery or electronics, and only if the manufacturer says it's safe. Boiling or a dishwasher can sterilise solid silicone, glass and stainless steel. Never boil TPE, jelly or anything with a motor.
Why is my TPE toy sticky?
TPE gets tacky as oils in the material rise to the surface, especially after washing. Once it's completely dry, dust it lightly with cornstarch or a TPE renewal powder. If it stays sticky after cleaning and powdering, or starts to break down, replace it.
How do I remove stains from TPE?
Prevention is easier than cure. TPE absorbs dye from clothes, bedding and other toys. Light marks may fade with gentle washing, and some doll makers sell stain removers designed for TPE. Avoid solvents, bleach and abrasive scrubbing, which damage the surface. Wash new clothes before dressing a TPE doll.
Can I store TPE and silicone toys together?
It's best not to. TPE can react with other soft materials and pick up colour from them. Store each toy separately in a clean, breathable bag or its own box, away from heat and sunlight.
