Quick answer
Thrust length, also called thrust travel or stroke length, is how far the shaft of a thrusting dildo moves in and out on each stroke. It's different from insertable length, which is how much of the toy can go inside you. On thrusting dildos under $100, listed thrust travel typically ranges from about 0.5 in to about 1.8 in. Under an inch gives a short, pulsing movement; the longest-stroke models list around 1.2–1.8 in. If a listing doesn't give a figure, assume it's short.

Thrust length vs insertable length
| Spec | What it measures | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Insertable length | How much of the toy can go inside | Depth and comfort |
| Diameter | How wide the shaft is | Comfort; often matters more than length |
| Thrust length (travel) | How far the shaft moves per stroke | How much movement you get |
| Speed / modes | How fast or in what pattern it moves | Rhythm, not distance |
A dildo can be long and still have a short stroke. The Brodie is large at about 8.3 in insertable, and also has the longest listed travel here. The 8-mode dildo below has about 5.9 in insertable but moves only about 0.6 in.

How to read listings
- Look for “thrust distance”, “stroke”, “telescopic length” or “travel”. Different sellers use different words for the same thing.
- Check the units. Some listings use centimetres. 1 in is about 2.54 cm.
- Don’t confuse total length with travel. “8.5 in thrusting dildo” usually refers to the toy’s size, not how far it moves.
- Treat figures as claims. They’re manufacturer numbers, and the actual stroke may shrink under pressure or at lower battery.
Which thrust length suits you?
Short or long stroke?
Choose this if…
Short travel (under about 0.8 in) if you're a beginner or want added sensation rather than a full stroke. Longer travel (about 1.2 in or more) if movement is the main reason you're buying.
Skip this if…
Thrusting toys with no listed travel, unless the price is low enough that it doesn't matter.
Spend more if…
- You want a long stroke at a moderate diameter
- You want a sex machine with adjustable stroke length
Save money if…
If you're happy with a short stroke, the cheapest thrusting models do the job.
Larger toys tend to have longer strokes, so if you want a long stroke without a large diameter, the mid-length models are the best compromise. For our picks, see the best thrusting dildos under $100. If you’re unsure whether thrusting is worth it at all, read thrusting vs vibrating dildos.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good thrust length for a thrusting dildo?
It depends on what you want. Around 0.5–0.8 in gives a short, pulsing movement that suits beginners and people who mainly want added sensation. Around 1.2 in or more gives a more noticeable stroke. Under $100, the longest listed figure we found is about 1.8 in, on a large dildo.
Is thrust length the same as insertable length?
No. Insertable length is how much of the toy can go inside you. Thrust length is how far the shaft moves on each stroke. A dildo can have 8 in of insertable length but only move 0.6 in, so check both figures.
Why don't some listings give a thrust length?
Listings vary in how much detail they give, and many lead with speed or the number of modes instead. Without a figure you can't compare movement, so if a thrusting toy doesn't state its travel, assume it's at the short end and compare it against models that do.
Does more speed make up for a short stroke?
Not really. Faster settings change the rhythm, but a short stroke still moves only a short distance. Speed and stroke length are separate specs, so compare them separately.
