How to Warm Up for Prostate Play

Anal play can be incredibly satisfying and quite intensely pleasurable for some people, but as with all anal sex, it’s important to do things slowly and carefully. Prepping for prostate stimulation (a.k.a. prostate play) is a great way to start slow and gradually increase your arousal. Not only will you feel more comfortable when you’re ready to go for it, you may even find that you don’t want to rush! Getting all warm and ready for prostate stimulation is about more than just letting your body adjust, it’s about setting a mood and creating space for the adventure ahead.

Getting Your Mind Right

As you may have heard, the prostate is a walnut-sized gland located inside the rectum two to three inches in. It can be accessed by prostate stimulation through the anal canal, and has sometimes been dubbed “the G-spot for men” by those who have experienced it. But there are a lot of muscles around the anus and they are not used to being stretched or teased. The anus also has no self-lubrication, so it’s a good idea to give your body time to acclimate before you try going further. If you jump into prostate stimulation too fast and without a proper warm up, you may find things to be tight, uncomfortable or even a bit painful. Taking time to warm up will relax your anal muscles, increase blood flow, and get you in the mood for a whole new kind of play.

Getting your mind in the right place can start with preparing your physical environment. Lighting some candles, turning down the lights, or putting on some relaxing music is all totally up to you and what gets you in the mood. Whether you go solo or are sharing the experience with a partner, the most important thing is that you are not rushed. Take your time to get yourself feeling calm and aroused. A hot shower or bath can be a great way to help your body relax, and is also a nice way to ensure everything is nice and clean.

Touching or Massaging

Getting warmed up for prostate stimulation can involve some solo or partnered foreplay. Masturbating, kissing gently, touching or massaging your own or your partner’s body can help you start to relax and feel more turned on. The more aroused you are the looser your anal muscles will be. Applying gentle pressure with your hands, mouth or external vibrator on or around your nipples can also help get you there.

Anal Hygiene

People often express concern about the cleanliness of their anus when it comes to preparing for anal sex or other forms of anal play. Everyone’s comfort level here is different, but doing a basic anal hygiene routine before your warm-up can help you feel cleaner and more confident.

Flush your bowel movements out of your anus, and then wash the area with warm water and a mild soap. You might also like to use an anal rinse or bulb enema for additional cleanliness. Be careful not to overdo it, as rinsing too much can cause irritation or dryness.

Touching Externally

Applying a generous amount of water-based or hybrid lubricant around your anus and gently rubbing around your anal opening in slow, circular motions is an excellent way to start. Using clean hands yourself or having your partner assist you, slowly rub the lubricant in and give your body time to get used to the sensation. There is no need to rush. A slow, relaxed start is key. You can also massage the perineum, the soft area between your scrotum and anus. Gentle pressure here can help massage your prostate indirectly, and can be a nice way to ease your body into things. Try using a warm compress or a small external vibrator to make this step more fun.

Inserting a Finger or Small Toy

If you prefer toys to fingers or both, you can also try inserting a slim, beginner-friendly butt plug made of body-safe silicone. Choose a small, skinny one that is about the size of your finger and let it sit inside while your body becomes accustomed to the sensation. You can use a vibrator or other toy on yourself or your partner to help you relax and get in the mood for prostate stimulation.

Inserting a Finger or Small Toy

When your anus and anal muscles feel more relaxed, you can move to light internal stimulation. Apply more lube and wear a finger cot or glove to be on the safe side, then insert one well-lubricated finger slowly and gently. Do not force past any resistance. Instead, breathe in deeply, then as you exhale, apply even, steady pressure. Your muscles will relax and the finger will slip in more easily. You can also use a slim, beginner-friendly butt plug made of body-safe silicone. Choose a small, skinny one that is about the size of your finger and let it sit inside while your body becomes accustomed to the sensation. You can use a vibrator or other toy on yourself or your partner to help you relax and get in the mood for prostate stimulation.

Locating the Prostate

Once you’re in, you can start to explore for the prostate. The prostate is located on the front wall of the rectum, so face your belly button and work on that inner wall with your finger or toy. It will feel like a small, slightly firm bump that you can press and massage. Do some slow, exploratory “come hither” motions or even just light pressing.

As you get more comfortable, you can even start squeezing your pelvic floor muscles as the toy or finger moves in and out. By tightening and relaxing your pelvic floor muscles, you will create an internal movement that massages the prostate and adds a natural rhythm to your prostate stimulation.

Positioning

Everyone’s body is a bit different, so if you are struggling to find or feel the prostate, do not be afraid to experiment with positioning. Lying on your side with your knees bent is a great place to start. You will have access to your partner’s body or your own without straining or being uncomfortable. Try squatting, lying on your back with your knees to your chest, or standing with one leg propped up on a chair or countertop. You can also do reverse bear crawl. Experimenting with positioning can help you change up the angle and depth of your prostate stimulation and make it even more pleasurable.

Moving positions throughout play is also a nice way to switch things up and avoid getting too tired or sore. Comfort and access are the most important things to keep in mind here, so do not be afraid to play around.

Getting Serious

Once you are sufficiently loose, relaxed and aroused, you may be ready to introduce a curved prostate massager. Prostate massagers are toys specifically designed to press against the prostate with very little effort on the part of the user. When you are ready, apply more lube, insert the toy slowly, and continue to breathe deeply and steadily. Let your body lead the way as you insert the toy and then begin to use light rocking motions to stimulate the prostate. Many prostate toys come with built-in vibration. If this is the case with the toy you are using, start at the lowest setting. You may be surprised at how even low-level vibration can significantly increase sensation. Allow the toy to rest against your prostate for a while and enjoy the stimulation.

Prostate orgasms are a real thing! There is a wide spectrum of pleasure available during prostate stimulation, and a prostate orgasm may or may not include ejaculation. Orgasms for some people are more full-bodied or even wave-like. Even if you do not have a traditional prostate orgasm, the goal is to enjoy the sensations and get more in touch with what your body likes.

Cleanup and Reflection

Finished with your session? Great! Remove any toy or finger slowly and gently, as your muscles may be a bit sore or tired. Sit with it for a few minutes and give yourself time to recover. Drink some water and wash up, taking care to clean your toys with warm water and a mild, body-safe cleanser.

Take some time to reflect on your experience! How did it feel? What worked, what could be improved upon, and what would you like to experiment with next time? If you were with a partner, it’s a good idea to talk about your experience together. Was there anything either of you would have liked more or less of? If so, how can you make that happen?

Warm-Ups Are Fun and Important!

The more time and patience you put into your warm up, the better your experience will be. Prepping for prostate stimulation is all about enhancing your pleasure, building confidence, and setting the foundation for a future filled with even more fun. Setting a mood, engaging in foreplay, prepping your body, and simply being in tune with your body and its responses is a great way to unlock a whole new world of sexual satisfaction. Whether solo or with a partner, remember that practice, communication and, of course, a healthy sense of curiosity are your best tools.
